That said letting a highly mutative highly contagious virus roam freely isnt very smart either

"flatten the curve" has always been about letting a "highly mutative highly contagious virus", or the coronavirus, "roam freely". Otherwise the marketing wouldn't be about a curve. The analogy is of taking a bandaid off slowly rather than ripping it off.
