Masks aren't useless, they're good for preventing your water droplets from spreading to others.

The virus spreads through aerosols, which aren't stopped by masks.

Both aerosols and water droplets.

We don't know the rate. The chances of the air breathed out from an infected person containing the virus could be like 10% and a 50/50 percent chance of it sticking onto your mask.

The chances of your water droplets containing the virus could be 50% with a 99% chance of it staying on the mask.

This means that mask wearing would significantly reduce the chance of you spreading the virus, just not 100%. If 10% of the population doesn't wear a mask, then masks becomes completely useless because it doesn't protect yourself. 1 non-mask wearer can infect 9 mask wearers, for instance.
