Thanks, have you used these? Are they simple? Does the spam filter work?

As a programmer myself, my experience is that the tech crowd gets everything wrong since they always choose pointless complexity. So whatever the tech crowd hates most is probably best.

Protonmail gets a personal recommendation from me, as it would appear what they're offering checks out as legit. Look into their history; IIRC they shut down for about a year or so since they refused to build in a backdoor under Obama since they were being used by terrorists to communicate or something. It's admittedly been a while since I've looked them up, but I've got nothing but good things to say from my distracted opinion.
