I am not a seasoned professional of close photography of celestial bodies, so would you kindly educate me as what the telltales of this being fake are? My newbie eyes recognize no such clue on the photo.

Just overall we know that pictures of planets are always fake, they admit this. They say they use composites cuz planets are so big they can't fit them in one pic which makes no sense. As another poster said this appears to be done using a paint program and it appears like brush strokes. And there's no stars shown as usual because people would be able to check if it's real, where the location of this planet Venus checks out.
