Imagine a full crew of women sent to Mars, and nobody talking to one another except in short clipped sentences. "I'm fine!"

The article makes a good case though. I mean, the women going to Mars aren't going to be your typical bickering female. They undergo extreme training, but even before that, they're already scientists and engineers at the top of their fields.

Yeah, I'm just being misogynistic for the laughs. However, I don't think it would be a good idea to send only men or only women on a trip like that. Sexual activity aside, the social isolation of a voyage like that would need the strengths of both of the 2 genders.

    I agree.

This feminism/intersectionality mindset is such a clown show. Obviously if they do fail, it would never be their fault. It's always the same, pretend you know more than most humans that ever lived - make retarded decisions that would never happen unless you are indoctrinated in a series of contradictions and dogmas - proceed to watch said decision completely and utterly fail - blame the failure on the people who disagreed with you at the beginning - repeat.

Mission to Mars. Hahaha that's funny.

The good news is, that lacking gravity, their vaginas won’t bleed all over the cabin. So yeah, it could work, aside from more that three women in the same room not getting along, ever.

I don't think they're going to be more comfy with a giant, accumulating blood clot in their barrels.

One advantage is that an all-female crew would likely require significantly fewer resources.

I thought of this over a decade ago, and it's not only in my Bittersweet Seeds story, but it's a critical element.

Like light small horse jockeys - but space jockeys. A crew of 5 small bald women - to reduce detritus they start the mission with shaved heads, each with a unique pattern.

Spoiler: my heroic male protagonist stowaway is too large to fit in their small space suits and is a martyr at the end (named Ernest Martin Achbar - great earnest martyr).

    Hurray...sexism?

"Women use less resources because they are lighter"

Ummm...a statistical observation that is only true on average and is analogous to 'blacks have lower IQs', really feminists? I guess we better not let any blacks up there either seeing as they have low IQs. Really great rhetoric guys. I weigh less than a lot of women at 130 pounds, but I can't go and Lizzo the Hutt can? Women can be fat you idiots. This is pure bigotry in the name of unbigotedness, just insane. You could just impose a fucking gender neutral WEIGHT LIMIT if that is the real concern. God I hate people so much

I want SpaceX to go to mars. Orbiter missions bored me as a kid. I want NASA to earn my confidence in them by returning to the moon.

It doesn't look like that was actually his alt, check out the comment again. Looks like a bot copied u/carn0ld's comment then later edited a URL into it.

It makes a good case based on :

a)The fewer resources they will need-less oxygen, less food and less space. On the mission to Mars macroscale,it cuts on costs significantly.

(note:The article fails to account for the menstruation needs- either you allow for monthly menstruation and take into account the mass of pads/tampons needed or you will have to account for the mass and side effects of menstruation suppressing drugs.Just a personal observation).

b)The fewer chances of heart attacks and female reproductive systems being at less at a risk from radiation.

c)All-woman groups being far more likely to choose non-confrontational approaches to solve interpersonal problems and most definitely are more likely to deal with a situation without resorting to violence according to statistics.

No, thats a good case for a WEIGHT LIMIT, not wide-sweeping sexism. You do realize that some women are fat, and some men are small right?

      [–]dike 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

With a female and a male of the same height, weight, and body fat percentage, the female will still need less food and oxygen because she has a slower metabolism. The female body uses food and oxygen more efficiently. If they can find enough competent female astronauts who want to spend the rest of their lives on Mars, I think it's fine.

The social claims are bogus imo. Neither masculine nor feminine styles of conflict resolution are superior, and the astronauts will most likely all be dykes anyway so they wouldn't operate socially like a group of typical straight girls.

Same fallcy, people are not statistics, you arent dealing with people of the same height, weight and body fat percentage. You can very well have some men that need less resources than some women, they can be smaller. I guarantee Lizzo needs more resources than me. This is the same black IQ argument. I guess we shouldnt let Ben Carson be a brain surgeon because all things being equal blacks have lower IQs. Because it turns out he is a pretty damn good brain surgeon, even though on average, blacks are not the best brain surgeons.

You could just calculate each individuals resource requirements rather than using a heuristic, you would end up with MORE women than men this way like you want, without discriminating on sex

      Sure that sounds good.

I doubt that they're really trying to prove yo mamas so fat her ass is the size of a planet, but a bunch of morbidly obese astronauts floating around like Michelin Men in a giant cup of space cocoa is a hilarious idea.

Obese astronauts would require less food for a short period of time, but there are other complications that make it seem not worth it.

      [–]MyLongestJourney 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I am pretty certain they won't be picking any landwhales for that mission.

      [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

No, but its still a discriminatory heuristic. I imagine it would be a simple matter to calculate resource usage for each astronaut and choose based on this criteria that is more accurate and doesnt discriminate based on sex - even if you'd probably end up with mostly females anyway

      [–]MyLongestJourney 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Personally I want both male and female astronauts. If we want to live on Mars one day,we must collect data on how both sexes will fare dealing with both environmental challenges and interpersonal relations/conflict.

Easier to find woman actors to lie about never leaving the studio.

That's dumb. The first mission will set up the following missions for success. It is the most important one. There is no such thing as "failure" regardless of who goes because there is literally nothing to measure against. But it will make a huge difference how much those first settlers get done.

We should make the best effort possible, and that means an all male, all white crew.
