Over the years he started to believe his own PR. He believed he was a savior who brought truth, packaged by his writers, to his audience every night. He always was a smug narcissist and after his retirement he just could not live without being the center of attention and spewing nonsense over his admiring, easily impressed followers who set such a low bar. I gotta disagree with Jimmy D on this one—Jon never was great; he was always full of it and himself.
