IMO, it all comes down to the advent of negative campaigning

Although only 10% of advertisements aired in the 1960 campaign were negative, in the 2012 campaign only 14.3% of aired ads were positive.

Notice in the video that the division becomes especially defined from the 1970's to the 1980's. Balkanization has become business as usual, and we wonder why the divisions have become so deep. And to add to the fun, the first amendment pretty much guarantees negative campaigning will remain prevalent.

They know people don't really trust them, therefore they control of fear of choosing the worst person.
