Were that true a peace deal would be simple. Putin withdraws from Ukraine. In return, NATO membership would remain as it is, but Putin won't accept this

That has been on the table the whole time and continues to be. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pressure President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cut off peace negotiations with Russia the last time this agreement was almost made. This was the demand and terms from the start and through the whole event.

reports in mid-March indicated that Russian and Ukrainian delegations "made significant progress" toward a 15-point peace deal that would involve Ukraine renouncing its NATO ambitions in exchange for the withdrawal of Moscow's troops.

"Russia has sent signals they are interested in a ceasefire along current lines publicly for a long time—they have said publicly that accepting Russian control of Ukrainian territory is a prerequisite for negotiations," the State Department spokesperson said. "But we haven't seen anything to indicate Russia is truly prepared to enter into some sort of negotiation that involves backing away from its maximalist demands."

"What Russia wants are articles of capitulation," the spokesperson added.
