Really sad. U.S. newsroom employment has fallen 26% since 2008

Nah man, journalists are lazy talentless whores. Better off without them.

They're the main reason you have a reasonable quality of live in a democracy that has freedoms of press and some of the few remaining investigative journalists. Without the muck-rakers, corporate greed and human rights abuses continue unabated. You would not enjoy living in a country that has no press freedom. Sorry to sound preachy - but this is a topic that I think is important, especially in Saidit echo chambers.

Our most famous journalists, Bernard and Woodstove, were shills. Their kind is bought and paid for.

Nope. Without investigative journalists, our lives would be shit.

While the term makes it sound as if Thompson, who committed suicide in 2005, believed in exaggeration and hyperbole, gonzo journalism is something else entirely. The reporters get involved. They participate rather than merely describe the events. Gonzo journalists don't take the passive approach. Sometimes, Hunter became engaged to his own detriment, but there's no denying that he changed the shape of investigative reporting.

I love Dr. Thompson, big fan of his work. My college roomie used to want to watch Fear & Loathing every day, multiple times a day, all year. Partly I think because it's the only movie we owned. And I've read most of his work. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail of '72 was fantastic.

But Thompson went around getting fucked up, partying with Hell's Angels, and at events, and he made a ton of shit up.

Ida Tarbell

She was a muckraking agent of Standard Oil's competitors. Corporate goonery.

Anderson Cooper

He's definitely got to be a cia asset.

I think we'd be fine without all these dudes.

Murrey Marder

A downright villain! Communists had infiltrated the US. I know it seemed like McCarty was crazy by how we write about it now, he was right.

David Halberstam

Probably a communist. Helped lose us the war, he definitely warn't no patriot.

Woodward and Bernstein

They toppled one of the smartest, most accomplished Presidents of all time. Pawns of the FBI and the watergate coup.

Kate Adie

Some foreign chick.

Melvin Claxton Uncovers Prison Abuse

There's still prison abuse, read about it pretty frequently

Henry Nxumalo Uncovers Apartheid

Yeah, that worked out great.

Christiane Amanpour

Who?

Holy mackerel - I've never known anyone who threw this much shade at investigative journalists. Thanks for the info. We need these folks and people like them, even if - as you point out - there are other ways of reading about their work. Indeed, some of the best journalists were murdered. There's a long list of them, sadly.
