I've seen a cute conspiracy theory that both candidates are playing along to drag the result out as long as possible so all those low attention span rioters waiting to set cities on fire get bored and go home.

This is what I feel is much more likely.

I also feel like violence becomes more likely as the tension builds, which plays right into the “establishment’s” hand.
