The guy who attacked Jake Gardner deserved to die.
Why?
Because he was damaging property, and assaulting a business owner?
Anyone with a conscience feels some degree of guilt after events such as this. Regardless of any legal justification.
Jake Gardner sounded like a decent enough fellow.
Did he deserve to live with the guilt of killing someone?

When a person is defending themselves and their property justly, then anyone attacking them should expect to die.
Maybe they should. It doesn't mean they will, or that other will agree.
I have no sympathy for the thugs who attacked him.
Do you have sympathy for the regrets a person may have who killed someone that they didn't want to have to kill?
