cancel culture has parallels with the Chinese cultural revolution and the European witch hunts.

Or rather, with bullshit from conservative folks about "Violent" video games, DnD, "Devil's lettuce" and "Satanist music". Something that conservacucks will conveniently not mention. People that enacted this shit have no moral rights to bitch about cancel culture.

People that enacted this shit have no moral rights to bitch about cancel culture.

Who founded this? Let's see:

The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was an American committee formed in 1985 with the stated goal of increasing parental control over the access of children to music deemed to have violent, drug-related or sexual themes via labeling albums with Parental Advisory stickers.
The women who founded the PMRC are Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and later Vice President Al Gore

You can't make this shit up -- or well, I guess you can.

Whataboutism? Really?

How about something from this century?

[–]King_Brutus 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

You're right, they should have just massacred the entire staff like Charlie Hebdo.

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

do you seriously think charlie hebdo was massacred by the same people who are boycotting jk rowling because she said only women can menstruate

[–]King_Brutus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

No, why would anything I just said imply that?

[–]Nelumbo 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

then why are you bringing up terror acts by al-qaida? chipit is obsessed with the nonsensical idea that only leftists are capable of censorship, and he asked for an example of modern right wing censorship, which I provided. I don't see how your comment about charlie hebdo is supposed to be a refutation of that. unless it was meant to be a joke.

[–]King_Brutus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

unless it was meant to be a joke.

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

alright, it's hard to tell what is meant as a joke when there's so many genuine neo-nazis on this website.

[–]King_Brutus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Getting back to the point I will say that modern day leftist censorship is far more commonplace (twitter mobs, MSM outlets, reddit, etc etc) and SUCCESSFUL than right wing censorship if we're exclusively talking about social media "cancelling".

I hadn't even heard about the link you provided and would never have heard about it because most people don't care about christians getting upset over things unless it's the butt of a joke (see "war on Christmas"). Almost every group has principles and will act in opposition to actors who go against those principles, but in modern day there's a huge wave of censorship against the right.

Whataboutism isn't an argument. It neither addresses nor refutes the premise.

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

then don't ask for "something from this century"

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

Do you understand that the premise is "cancel culture is real, denying it is a lie" and if you wish to refute the premise, you must present arguments in favor of your position?

Shouting "Billy's mom lets him do it" isn't an argument. Do you get this, or are you deliberately arguing dishonestly?

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

I never said leftists don't get things cancelled, they do, and so do right wingers

[–]Zahn 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

What are some glaring examples of right wingers getting things cancelled?

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

[–]Zahn 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

You cherry picked one example? How about showing proofs of widespread cancel culture propagated by the right.

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That's whataboutism. Do you know what whataboutism is?

[–]Nelumbo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

do you think right wingers are unable to cancel things?

[–]Chipit[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Whataboutism is distracting from a topic that the speaker would rather not talk about by accusing the other side of some irrelevant offense.

The overwhelming calls for censorship today are coming from the left. Free speech is not a left-wing value. It is regarded as only something ever used by racists.

[–]King_Brutus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There is almost no modern backlash against anything you described besides the usual stance against drug use by most conservatives. And how is adding a parental advisory sticker on adult themed music in any way "cancel culture"?
