I have been looking at chat apps, Discord and Telegram, and of course they are horrible. But this got me thinking about the difference between chat and forums. The only significant difference is that chat is real time. Otherwise the concepts are the same. Consider classic forums versus reddit-like forums versus Discord. These are the related concepts:
- forum = sub = server
- thread = post = channel
- post = comment = message
I will use classic forum terminology. In most classic forums, the thread layout is flat just as it is in Discord. If you make forum threads update in real time, then you have the best world of both forums and chat. Current chat apps are a complete mess, completely unorganized. Putting real time conversations in a forum context would be the ideal social media in my opinion. What do you think?
