Because "work from home" is synonymous with doing nothing and expecting a hefty handout for it.

Also even if people just work as much innovation and efficiency go down because everyone just does their job rather than talking over problems and floating new ideas.

I haven't observed any of that kind of behavior. My employer sublet all its office space and went fully remote in the middle of 2020, and we've at least doubled in size since.

If a software company can't make remote working work well, they have deeper problems in the area of performance management. Herding people into an office might feel like the answer, but it's probably not.

What do they gain from in office work? I'm finding it hard to believe that it adds any value to this kind of work in light of all the technology out there, especially for a tech company. I'm convinced all this cock and bull about corporate culture and the value of in office work is just that and it has more to do with the staggering hit corporate real estate has taken. These office space companies are defaulting on their loans left and right and they're blaming it on remote work. It's bullshit.
