I haven't observed any of that kind of behavior. My employer sublet all its office space and went fully remote in the middle of 2020, and we've at least doubled in size since.

If a software company can't make remote working work well, they have deeper problems in the area of performance management. Herding people into an office might feel like the answer, but it's probably not.
