Members of a synagogue in Montgomery, Alabama, who came together for a pre-Rosh Hashanah video call on Zoom last weekend were subjected to foul antisemitic and racist abuse by a group of outsiders who hacked — or “Zoom-bombed” — the event.

Speaking to the Montgomery Advertiser on Tuesday, Rabbi Scott Kramer of Agudath Israel Etz Hayim Synagogue recalled that about 50 congregants had turned up for the meeting on Saturday night, for the purpose of reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the new year, 5781, that begins on Friday night.

But shortly after the meeting began, as many as seven hackers intruded on the proceedings, bombarding participants with anti-Semitic invective and imagery, along with racist and homophobic barbs.

“Screens came up of very shocking imagery of Hitler, swastikas and I thought some pornographic images,” Rabbi Kramer said of the 10-minute onslaught.

“It was chaotic,” he recalled. “Then voices came in screaming at everyone using bad language, antisemitic language, telling us, ‘You should go back to the showers,’ which is of course a reference to the Holocaust.”

72-year-old Micki Beth Stiller, one of the attendees, said that she had never before experienced something so disturbing.

Elton B. Stephens, Jr., the retired CEO of EBSCO Industries, was reportedly kidnapped from his bed last Friday and held for ransom. He is currently safe, and two suspects are in custody.

EBSCO is one of the state’s largest privately held companies, with annual sales of about $3.2 billion as of 2018 counting subsidiaries. Stephens is the son of the company’s late founder. Their family was estimated to have a net worth of $4 billion as of 2014, per Forbes.

Alabama Media Group on Thursday reported that Blount County’s Matthew Amos Burke, 34, and Tabatha Nicole Hodges, 33, have been charged with burglary, kidnapping an adult for ransom, extortion and theft of property.

The pair allegedly broke into a Birmingham home Stephens is renting in the early morning hours of this past Friday. When Stephens awoke that morning, Burke was standing over him, per reports.

Burke and Hodges are alleged to have robbed the house of valuables and three firearms.

They reportedly threatened to kill Stephens if he did not comply with them or if he attempted to call for help.

“They took him to a trailer in St. Clair County where they had him wire $250,000 into their account. They returned him to his home about 4:30 p.m. [on Friday]. Police were called,” Alabama Media Group wrote.

Law enforcement officials declined comment on the pending case. Stephens says he did not previously know the suspects.

Two life-saving efforts ended in tragedy when an FDNY truck headed to a Brooklyn fire slammed into an ambulance rushing a heart attack victim to the hospital, with the patient killed early Thursday and another 11 people injured, police said.

The lights were flashing on both vehicles when the collision occurred at a Bedford-Stuyvesant intersection, leaving a woman critically injured inside the ambulance as she rode along with the victim, officials said.

It's justified, yes. That does not make it right. I don't mean to talk down on you, especially because you are aware of enough of the problem to know that challenging them with force is the answer. I agree that they must be slain, but hatred will lead to unjust slayings, mutilations, torture, all sorts of morally repugnant things. It's better to slay them with an even hand, devoid of hate. I don't think this has ever happened before in human history, and I know that if it were, a new system would have a solid chance at growing and taking root. If we end this regime of evil with more evil, we do nothing but continue the cycle. The regime must be stopped, and I won't turn away people with vengeance in their eyes. I support what you are saying, but hate will not help. It's one thing to oppose evil with force and action, it's another thing to waste energy and mental space hating something. It's fine to detest it, but that's not hate.

Action will be needed from us all if we want change, but it must come from a place of love and understanding or else we will simply create another corruptible system. We must do something new, which would be to throw our hate down and challenge others to do the same. For some people, not hating means not fighting. For others, it means fighting in the defence of good. Hate simply redirects your intent and will elsewhere, away from the goal you actually want to reach.

And the same goes for Canada's TURDeau, France's Macron, Germany's Merkel, the UK's BoJo, and so on. Probably the only non-co-opted leaders are the one in North Korea and Assad of Syria. A second Parkland cop has been reinstated on a technicality after being fired for his response to the 2018 school shooting, according to reports.

Broward Sheriff Deputy Josh Stambaugh, who hid behind his car before driving away from the shots fired at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was fired 13 days too late, an arbitrator ruled this week, the local CBS affiliate reported.

Stambaugh’s firing went against Florida state law requiring discipline of law enforcement officers within 180 days of an investigation’s end. It’s not clear how much he is owed through back pay.

The decision follows that of another arbitrator who reinstated Sgt. Brian Miller four months ago, ruling that Sheriff Gregory Tony had missed his firing deadline by two days. Miller is due at least $125,000 in back pay.

The sheriff’s office has already appealed the Miller decision and told the station it will also challenge the ruling for Stambaugh.

A 45-year-old Vacherie man has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison after his guilty plea earlier this year to a fourth DWI charge.

Prosecutors accused Jason Hines, 19439 Harry Town Lane, Vacherie, of hitting a vehicle in his truck and driving away while his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit to drive of 0.08%, prosecutors in St. James Parish said.

Shortly after the hit-and-run crash was reported Dec. 8, 2018, sheriff's deputies spotted Hines pulling into a convenience store parking lot in the red truck described in a crash complaint. Deputies watched him get out of his truck and check his rear bumper, prosecutors with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

Hines later told deputies at the store that he had had a couple of beers earlier in the day, but deputies also saw an open bottle of liquor in his truck and a Styrofoam cup suspected of holding some of the liquor, prosecutors said.

Hines, who also smelled of alcohol, performed poorly on a field sobriety test and deputies arrested him, deputies said.

He was unable to do a blood-alcohol breath test at the parish jail in Convent but a blood test later found his blood alcohol content was 0.21%, prosecutors said.

He was later booked on counts of DWI fourth offense, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, hit and run driving with no injury, and possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle, deputies said.
