They say it's just about the Donbass region (far southeastern Ukraine) which is more ethnically russian, which it is.

However, Russia has just exploded missiles near Kiev, which is the capital of Ukraine in the middle, far from the east, and then they sent six helicopters and attacked an airbase near Kiev. In addition to all the stuff they're doing in the Donbass region. So it looks like they're going to try and take the whole country... Unless it was a limited strike and they're going to stop at the Donbass region. They didn't stop when they took Crimea, so why would they stop after Donbass? At least Donbass is half ethnically Russian, but they have no reason for bombing Kiev.

They've already killed 18 Ukrainian civilians from shelling, is what I've heard. And that was just in the region near Kiev. edit: Odessa

If it stops at Donbass, it might be a new stalemate situation. But if they go for Kiev, literally all of NATO will basically be forced to get involved, contractually.

NATO is under no obligation to Ukraine. Biden already ruled out a direct military response. Unless they threaten buffer countries like Poland and Latvia an armed response is off the table. What we're trying to do is make it cost Russia big time, hopefully make it too costly. Unfortunately Russia imported billions in currency, they prepared for this financial siege.

This is fun to watch, the Russian exchange index. It's good for us when it's tanking, it going up is bad. You can see a recovery now as they are feeling pretty confident we're all a bunch of pussies who won't do anything.

Edit: oh wait... Something might have happened. Goddamned fintech knows before we do, but the recovery looks stalled. Very dynamic situation.

Oh that's right they're not in NATO, good point. Putin just wanted them not to join, because they were considering it from what I understand. I think maybe that's why Putin made his move now, before Ukraine officially joined NATO?

The Russian stock market just permanently halted trading for all markets, I heard. For an indefinite amount of time. After it fell 45% or so. And the value of the ruble is crashing.

The sanctions are coming out hardcore from the west, but I'm not sure how much good it will do. I just hope they stop at the Donbass region and don't try to take Kiev. They were attacking a military airport near Kiev with a half-dozen helicopters though.

I imagine China will eventually side with Russia over this, but Russia is going to lose a lot of European commerce. Not sure if it will impact them enough to make them stop taking land. The best way this could work out is that Russia takes the Donbas region, stops, and then in 5 years everything is back to normal. Kind of like how China successfully took Tibet. If they overreach, it's going to be bad though.
