I watched a bear come out of it's cave at 5 am on a hiking trip to the top of halfdome. It was probably only about 30 ft away. We were spooked, but the bear ignored us.

Later that morning we saw two cubs go by about 50 yards away, and we GTFO of there cause momma bear was no where to be seen.

The only time I saw a bear in the wild was in the Great Smokey Mountains during a childhood vacation, and "wild" might not be the best word since it was about 25-feet from a road lined with tourists. Many people were outside their vehicles looking and taking pictures.

I remember the urge to get as close as possible just to be in the presence of these magnificent beings.
