We already shared music before the compact disc became a popular thing, I remember me sitting in front of my stereo device all day long mixing tapes that I changed with others all over the world via mail. For some people it was also the only option to get their hands on some kind of music that wasn't available everywhere. But in the most case it was to check music out before actually buying stuff, because you wanted only to support what you really liked. We continued this for a while when burning CDs became common, but when everyone got an internet access and thus was able to "steal" the music by himself, the times of privat changing music with other people of course died out without a sound. But well, I never was into popular music that one could know from mainstream media. Could imagine how making copies would do a damage to this soulless crap that is meant to gain money only.
