Precisely. It was a method of control, an excuse for men to act out violently when women didn't behave the way they want while still maintaining the illusion that they were "nice guys" to themselves.

You're speaking to her. Clutch those pearls all you want, baby, but it's true. Statistically speaking, women are far more likely to be assaulted by a man they knew personally. Moreover, men who "wouldn't hit a girl" are most likely to make an exception for women they know. All evidence points towards greater danger faced by women who are in close proximity to men. I pity heterosexual women.

You're projecting, my guy. Being angry over women having choices is a man thing. I don't feel entitled to women the way you do; I wasn't socialized for it.
