China and India appear to have the same population. China also appears to have 20 times the population of the US based on the amount of red. Australia should be maybe 10% of the US population, but it looks like 1%.
It looks like pretty much the "artist" painted some red blotches in China and India because they don't have any data. In contrast, the US data set for cities seems more accurate.

I'll agree it has a lack of contrast at the high end, but I don't think it's from a lack of data

Usually these maps go into purple then nowadays... Maybe its older.
