    How much of the Western slave trade was also just an extension of the Islamic slave trade though?

    It's often painted as African tribes delivered their captives to the coast due to ethnic wars between pagans but in truth Islam was very much active in West Africa at that time and were conquering and subduing the locals. Likely many of these people were being snatched by Muslim warlords in much the same way girls are being taken en masse by Boko Haram in Nigeria today.
