They also have hikikomori issues, the genders hate each other, marriage rates and birth rates are dropping...

Yet they still can't smoke pot or anything. They are largely trapped in a world of work and alcohol, much like South Korea as well. Very controlled.

      They are controlled successfully.

And perhaps controlled because they are successful. Economic success makes people not want to rock the boat. It breeds passivity in every other aspect of life. Generally, the only people who rebel and overthrow governments, are those who cannot make ends meet. Thus by helping japan and SK succeed, they've trapped generations in to the "hard worker" mentality, which is being heavily exploited by companies for profit. And then the people wonder why their lives feel so hollow and pointless as the rug is pulled out from under them.

I agree. And as their success ends, people keep trying to repeat the old ways of "just do hard work and you can get ahead", but these methods do not function anymore. This is somewhat similar to the US too.

Elon Musk said he thinks humans might just be the evolutionary "bootloader" to AI. I think he might be right, but I imagine humanity will split over it, like the Amish did when they left mainstream society
