People literally pray to statues of saints. They weren't praying to the serpent.

They pray for their intercession to God. Same way you ask a family member or a pastor to pray for you.

If my family member were sitting on the couch next to me, I wouldn't be seen walking over to a statue to ask it to ask my family member.

ergo

what you said is a cope to explain away blatant idolatry. God is everywhere, at all times, and has no limit on his attentions.

So when you see a picture of your dead great grandfather do you consider idolatry?

If God is everywhere, I can worship to Him using anything. I prefer to worship asking the intercession of people who were examples of piety.

If you dont like your family thats not my problem.

I am the sole arbiter of faith in all history of mankind

Thats why there is no Christian without Catholicism. All "Christians" who think with their feels rather than rationality are doomed to gatekeep our religion to avoid Heaven. An eternal limbo, where one believes in God, but only what they think its worth. Imagine not having faith even in Jesus when he passed on His work in this world to Saint Peter.
