Less than 1/3 of Americans are capable of independent thought, but at least we're doing much better than most other countries in that regard.

That's hard to tell but they sure are more sheepish. I think it's primarily the schools that are at fault, because it's where you go to learn that society expects absolute unquestioning obedience from you, and thinking for yourself will be punished.

I put the start of this at Reagan's rescinding of the Fairness Doctrine in the 80's.
