This was already a thing in the 90s with AOL. The difference is that there were a bunch of local dial-up ISPs at the time. And independent chatrooms. Basically we're going backwards without the option of the option of not using big corporate ISPs.

I suggest getting a router that can support DD-WRT/OpenWRT with at least 2 antenna connections and getting an omni-directional antenna and at least a parabolic as well. Both can be obtained for under $60 shipped in the USA. With those a node for a MeshNet can be created. This will allow you to host a MeshNet node so others in your area (typically up to a mile away if the antennas are mounted in a proper place) can communicate, share files, host services such as websites, or even play games with LAN support, if they are close enough and have a router that supports WiFi WLAN, which used ones can be found in thrift stores for typically around $5. I have 4 of them sitting around.

It's like selling modchips. It's considered a tool to bypass copyright protection. The site was hosted in Germany for some stupid reason which has much harsher data control laws.
