Everything that they do is done in the firm belief that they'll always be the ones in control. I'm afraid it is optimism on your part. What's far more likely to happen is that they'll hold up that treatment as "proof" that all of their paranoid fantasies about fascism and the alt-right were true, and that everything that they did was justified as a consequence.

And, like the "it wasn't real Communism" smoothlobes, the obvious solution to their problems isn't to step back and assess what went wrong and why, but instead double down and do even more of what they did as soon as they have power again.
