Welcome to Ask Science

Everything that you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask.

Ask any question related to science.

Stay friendly, but no censorship on questions or answers!
Controversial questions and role-playing allowed.

Use <tags> to state the viewpoint and seriousness, in both questions and answers. Use [label] to specify the specialisation of science (like [Biology] or [Physics]).

<EX5> Explain like I am 5
<PR> Explain with peer-reviewed articles.
<WIKI> Explain via wikipedia.
<HS> Explain like I am on highschool
<UNI> Explain like I am on university
<PHD> Explain like a PhD (fun)
<POP> Explain like a popular science article (fun) <MAD> Explain like a mad professor (fun)
<ZEN> Explain like a Zen master (fun)
(Or invent your own for fun)

With this sub I want to encourage more humour and self-criticism in science. People can take science much too serious. Feel free to give a thorough answer to a silly question or reverse.

Don't insult someone, or attack them as a person. Respect each other! It is OK to disagree.

Try to prevent logical fallacies and logical biases. Scientific literature is full with them.

In my scientific career, I noticed that answers are different, depending on the level. Reality is often much more complex and different than expected. Censorship, peer-reviewing, futurism and corruption have reduced the self-correction of science. This all breaks science apart.

Hello, I am a chemist. It's been over a decade since I got my B.S. and I actually switched to project management after a brief period working in a lab, but I'll try to be helpful where I can be!
