You might be surprised. But I think the predictability is overwhelmed by the social fear of speaking out against it. They use that temporary fear to pass otherwise unpopular legislation. Just like the PATRIOT Act after 9/11. If you didn't support it, you weren't a patriot! And right after 9/11 if you weren't a patriot, that meant you hated America!

I agree 100%. And that means a lot of people know what is going on but self-censor themselves out of fear or cognitive dissonance.

Yup. I think it so many people that it is in fact a silent majority.

Which is why one person speaking out can have such an effect. One person taking a stance on the thing everyone else is thinking but too afraid to say. That's how revolutions and religions get started.
