solar pays off big over its lifespan, saving the homeowner money and insulating them from price-shocks, emergency power outages, and other horrors.

Eh. Not so much. If you do the calculation with the real numbers for power generation, lifespan, and maintenance costs, it's a wash unless you're paying a fortune per kw/hr from your utility. And if Wall St. is selling you a financial product, you can bet that the source of their profits isn't the sun or the Fed, it's you.

Same for electric cars, if you use real numbers for range, lifespan and maintenance, they are never cheaper unless your other car is a Ferrari. And given the environmental damage caused in fabrication of both EVs and solar cells, they're not doing anything for the environment either.
