When religion could no longer keep the serfs fenced in and captive, they had to invent something else. Chattel slavery was too expensive to maintain, and dangerous to the owner class when the slaves got too numerous. The answer was 'democracy'. We don't even know who owns us now, all we know are the names of the overseers who manage the herd. And we think we're free because we get to 'vote' on the uniform the overseers wear as they whip us into obedience.

I remember it being remarked by, I think, Mike Rivero (though he may not have coined it), how the soup lines are now hidden with the use of EBT.

They can't hide the tents on the sidewalks, nor the smell of shit. Well, only if Xi is in town. But yes, they are hiding the fact that 20% of the country is 'food-insecure', ie hungry, and they certainly do hide all the people who starve and/or freeze to death. Apparently they're all 'elderly' and 'frail' and die from terminal loneliness.
