The Atlantic whines:

 

Trump glares directly into the camera. He seethes. He glowers. He turns in a studied performance. Photos like this are typically exercises in enforced humility. Trump’s is a display of ongoing power. He treats his mug shot as our menace.

 

The sheer number of admissions in this one essay is remarkable.

 

Innocent until proven guilty? Not so much. The mugshot was supposed to be a "political message." It was supposed to diminish Trump, make him look "disheveled, displaced, small." This wasn't part of a neutral process of justice - because how could it be? Who believes the state needs an identifying photo of the most famous man on the planet? This was part of the punishment already decreed by the Elite. He wasn't supposed to turn it around on his persecutors. He was supposed to be "brought low." What happened?!

 

CNN started a countdown. MSNBC used an aerial feed as a backdrop, to keep liberals' "giddiness" at a fever pitch. And then, at the moment of fulfilment, the beautiful dream turned into a nightmare.

 

Trump’s booking photo is, in that way, a symbolic gesture—we needed no further documentation of the most inescapable face in the world—but also something of an omen. This will never be over, it suggests. That face, with all its dangers, will only become more difficult to avoid.

That mugshot is a reason to be fearful for its dangerous misapplied precedent and the evidence it presents of how far this country has sunk from the vaunted principles it claims but tramples--not only abroad but at home.

A death rattle of any democracy is when a sitting president uses the state security apparatus to go after political opponents and cover up lies and crimes committed by himself or his family.

Biden is doing that now. His actions make it clear he believes himself to be not the enforcer of the rule of law but the exception to it.

Glowers? I don't think I've seen that word since The Thief of Baghdad (1924) 📽️

Trump's glowering portrait reminds me of an obscure 1671 play called The Rehearsal, by George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. It is a hilarious parody of John Dryden's popular 1670 "heroic drama" Almanzor and Almahide, or the Conquest of Granada by the Spaniards. Villiers felt that such an overly dramatic and overly heroic play had no business being so popular, and that Dryden's play was begging for parody.

The Rehearsal has a character Drawcansir who is a parody of Dryden's hero Almanzor. In Act IV scene 1, Drawcansir blusters about the stage à la Trump, and grabs other people's goblets and quaffs their wine. Then he says:

I drink, I huff, I strut, look big and stare;
And all this I can do, because I dare.

That's Trump's mug shot, described in 1671 😺

Here are Almanzor's original lines from The Conquest of Granada:
