its not permanent

[–]bootylicious 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (48 children)

It is permanent, according to the information sent to the user who is required to like turtles. There is no indication anywhere that this is temporary.

The notice does not say it's permanent, but does not say it's temporary either. At Reddit, the word got around that the turtle shell can be removed if no longer needed.

[–]bootylicious 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (46 children)

Yes - it's expected to be permanent to anyone who gets the notice; and for the long period thereafter, the automoderator ban remains active, with absolutely no indication of a reversal of that turtle tax.

I'm seeing a major trend at WatB that many of the regular users don't want visitors to undertand WatB's approaches.

It's not deliberate. WotB has been doing this for seven years at Reddit so we're used to doing things certain ways. New WotB members at Reddit have adapted quickly to our quirks, so we haven't had to do much work on new user orientation.

I've been a Reddit WotB member for years - since the time Bernie campaigned (I helped him) - and still knew nothing of the turtle tax, types of bans, inside jokes, what's considered 'dickish' particularly at WatB, &c. A couple years ago I unsubscribed because it had been overrun with misinformation that's spread by the right and/or the 1% perhaps 4 years go. There have been some concerns on the sub that relate to Bernie. And I know that Trump's PR fooled people into believing that he was an outsider, somewhat like Bernie, and thus many Bernie voters were fooled into voting for Trump (who helped push the GOP agenda, as their puppet, harder than ever. I and others knew Bernie was unelecable after the DNC did not support him, and then Hillary failed to campaign properly, while also worrying potential voters. Trump got the anti-abortion vote, which was arguably the main message that turned Christo-fascist voters in his favor. But I digress.) Anyhow: I've visited WatB for years and didn't know what I've learned in the past few days about the sub.

That actually is one of the features of The Turtle. It is not as "Glaring Yellow Star" as certain people have claimed it is.

People can (apparently) go for years and not see it at all. At least, not notice it. The Turtle is much more apparent to the recipient than to those who do not know about it. Its innocuousness, its meaninglessness, is deliberate.

It was never meant to be an identifying mark, although some do treat it that way -- it is merely an extra requirement on "certain people."

I doubt this intention matters to 'shelled' users. The result is not dissimilar to this

Funny, but you seemed to have missed all of the "Yellow Star" arguments that were made years ago while you were allegedly at r/WeAreTheBern......

Made, and dealt with. This is nothing new.
At least, not to us.

you seemed to have missed... years ago...

what a crazy argument

We've heard that a lot over the years, and more times than not, it turns out the person making those claims was actually thinking of SandersForPresident, not WayoftheBern. Lack of Turtles, lack of "inside jokes" etc.... it fits the pattern.

I've visited WatB for years and didn't know what I've learned in the past few days about the sub.

Still haven't learned what the acronym is yet, it appears.

I explained this earlier, and won't explain it again. Essentially, I was at the sub for the period in which it was about this:

not a Bernie Sanders sub but it strives to emulate his WAY of building coalitions with political opponents on those issues where agreement can be found.

I don't know if anyone was 'shelled' at that time.

Within a year or two of the sub's creation it was hijacked by the right-wing misinformation one still sees today. I unsubscribed at that time. The quote above has been entirely untelated to WatB.

I was at the sub for the period in which it was about this: "not a Bernie Sanders sub but"

You might wanna go check the archives (yes, we have archives).
    That wording is fairly new.

Perhaps they were actually at r/WeAreTheBern? And got confused?

    And that right there:

I unsubscribed because it had been overrun with misinformation that's spread by the right and/or the 1% perhaps 4 years go.

    ... There's yer sign.

2019 was the year that others were gearing up for another Bernie run and some had to watch that heartbreak happen twice. The "misinformation" coming out was about the FBI and Russiagate which people were dealing with. The misinformation was the preparation for COVID to take over the news. The misinformation was the fact that Trump was targeted by the FBI right along with his followers similar to Nixon so the Deep State could support their agenda. And what do you know, sidebar got you covered on misinformation...

    Othering citizens to demonize dissent

^ THIS is indeed why I unsubscribed (thanks for mentioning it)

Then what are you doing on the Internet?

Science, my boy, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth.

If you preferred facts, you'd supply them instead of making claims without proof.
