Why Reddit is Collapsing: The Coming Reddit Crisis

Even if they go back to normal, what investor in their right mind is going to put money in a business that can be taken down by a handful of people?

I can sum up why reddit is crashing very quickly and succinctly.
That is a small list, but the really big reason really is the users at Reddit are just terrible people that are ideological worshipers and attack ANYONE who does not agree with them. Twitter is the only site I can think of who is more bankrupt of value on ANY stage.

I thought it was rather straight forward. Reddit is bought and paid for by large corps. Even in your own link they proudly display their corporate investors, such as Tencent, Fidelity Investments, VY Capital and SV Angel (corp owned investment firms), etc. Tencent/China just invested another 300 million and judging how reddit thinks of it's users and their wants, do you really not think they are allowing tencent/china to have special rights and privileges on the site or dictating how reddit will behave? Reddit is doing the same thing that Digg did 13 years ago, being bought out by it's investors (corporations) and selling out it's users. That is why Digg died and people all went to Reddit. Now I know the people on Reddit are super soft, but even they will abandon ship once China starts forcing their own policies on Reddit, which certainly will not be the far far left like their user base.
From that I clearly stated that corporate interference or ownership is a huge problem in the country and used big pharma as an example. If you are confused about let me know which part and I will be happy to try to clarify.

[–]bucetao6969 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (8 children)
Why it's the opposite?
Don't they mask traffic from your ISP and other people using your wifi?

i think buce is talking about an in-house vpn

[–]R51 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (1 child)
i know, i think they are confused because people will refer to a pi-hole as a vpn as well. the one originally being talked about is meant to be shared by a bunch of people and thus obfuscating traffic, but since they said wifi I'm guessing they're confusing it for the in house ad blocker / firewall

It’s been suggested that the CIA or FBI has compromised almost all major VPNs.
Not really compromised, just that they own the major ones.

Right.
A VPN screams “monitor me” or “watch me”.

Watched this last night. July-ish of last year, I got rid of all mainstream social media, including reddit. Been hunting nice alternatives this year. Stuff that has good conversations without the insane data mining and ad bullshit. Landed on spacehey as a general social media substitute. And I remembered saidit being a thing a few years ago. Glad to try this out. Hope it isn't shit. Just want to keep up with certain topics and be able to ask questions about those topics.

There aren't too many people here, but I find that to be a feature. You can actually carry on a conversation with the smaller group without getting lost in mega-threads.

Fair enough. I do like that this site works the exact same as reddit move for move. I will miss the incredible variety of more active subs but. At some point, you gotta walk the walk rather than talk the talk. If people really want to throw their weight around as consumers, they have to fucking MOVE ON. I'll keep browsing reddit via rif but after that I need a substitute. I'm dropping reddit like a hot potato. Their app is garbage and I expect they'll get rid of the old website next.

Variety-wise, the adage around here is that if you wish there were more going on, you've gotta do it yourself. More people + more engagement = more interesting stuff to browse. This site is very DIY and reminds me of the early internet with its (almost) anything goes philosophy.

Yup I'm about that life. That's why I enjoy spacehey. It's literally just MySpace. You have to curate your own experience. Ppl gripe about it but it's one of the reasons it's a good experience. Can't just show up and have ready made content right in front of you.

been a while since i logged in there, last time I just was a bunch of anime pfp..
[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (1 child)
Yeaaa there's a lot of that. But I've found a pretty good community to talk to and befriend. Lots of tech and nostalgia enthusiasts like me. Worse things than anime pfps anyway.
[–]R51 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (0 children)
cool, I'll check it out. I was kinda hoping it would take off as a real life thing like myspace but idk if that's even possible in today's internet.

Reddit will never collapse as long as there are millions addicted to it. I know people who still use reddit after multiple bans and being hated by the community there but they still go back because they're addicted to the scrolling fix

I'm not seeing where it's collapsing though. Maybe I'm just delusional but I vote "Reddit isn't dying".

Don't shoot, I'm just the messenger! :D
Seriously though, I posted it because it has a good synopsis of how Reddit came to be the mess that it is today.

Okay fine. On that front, it's pretty informative.
Call me a retard but I actually had no idea the other dude suicided.
[–]R51 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (4 children)
you're a retard
jk. yeah he did cuz he went into MIT and released a bunch of paywalled research papers & they tried making an example out of him
[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - 1 year ago (0 children)
No its okay, I am.
That whole thing is sad honestly.
[–]Masterblaster 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 1 year ago (2 children)
I suspect he accidentally downloaded something that would reveal links between Epstein and MIT. Didn’t he hang himself from a doorknob?
I doubt it. Public research papers? It was information that was accessible to anyone at MIT or something like that, his angle was that it's publicly funded research and therefore should be available to the public. Also that knowledge should be available to anyone not just people in wealthy nations. His dream did materialize with Reddit, though, so all in all his goal was realized in a significant way, despite how much the project as a whole has degraded. The company that got financially hit for the release of paywalled articles even dropped the charges, but he was still prosecuted. I think he was offered a plea deal bringing his 30 year sentence down to 7 months, but it would still mark him as a felon. He said no, countered, they said no, then he went onto the next not long after.

this theory didn't even exist until like 2 years ago. the evidence is non existent.

I hope it collapses because it’s a dipshit site: try asking why anyone is proud about sticking their dick up another guy’s asshole. Why are intelligent blacks so rare? Why illegal aliens from Muzzie countries are rapists? You get banned with a message about keeping communities safe…from words on a website. Fuck Reddit with a hot iron poker.

I hate this moon guy, he spews some big L takes.
He mentions the lack of free speech as if that would kill the platform. Most people there are for the cat videos anyway. The only thing killing it is the API pricing.

A moderator on one of the subreddits I visit suggested that the protest/blackout be continued (until reddit's owners capitulate) by a shutdown one day each week. I would offer that shutting down for 3 or 4 days (which particular days could be agreed upon by consensus) every week would make a continued protest more impactful while still allowing use of reddit to go on. What do you guys think?
