Ya know, as a Mexican American who's gone to Mexico for 6 months out of the year for 20 years (I'm 24), I can say I'm not surprised, if anything I feel like they deserve it. Since I was a kid I've always questioned these kinda of nut-job, unnecessary, eurocentric, religious cult rituals that involve unnecessary fire projectiles. However, I've always got chastised bc I was "wrong" for not believing or supporting this shit. I'm the "negative" one because I want these people to take this shit seriously. Although I'm sad that a life was taken, I hope these people learn a fucking lesson.

Their lack of safety precautions has nothing to do with the ritual, anywhere in the world where big fireworks are used, you don't sit on top of the whole pile and fire away one by one with your kid by your side

https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/fireworks-explosion-kills-trike-rider-in-religious-procession/

A 68-year-old man was killed and his 11-year-old son seriously injured Thursday after a three-wheel bike they were riding in a religious parade exploded in Macuspana, Tabasco.

The two were traveling behind a pickup truck bearing religious icons and playing music as part of a procession honoring a revered religious figure in the area, the Lord of Tila, a Christlike figure that has been revered in southeast Mexico since 1539 when his image first appeared in Chiapas.

The man was setting off fireworks when what appeared to be a bottle rocket fell back into the trike, causing a violent explosion.

The blast, which was recorded on video by the municipality’s Civil Protection office and which is circulating on social media, blew off the man’s leg and severely burned his son. Both were transported to the hospital where the man later died.

Fortunately, the crowds that often accumulate around such religious processions were sparse due to the coronavirus restrictions and no other casualties were reported.

Would seem like the firework failed to launch for whatever reason, and the timed fuse for the actual pyrotechnic went off while it was still on the bike.

Yeah having an 11 y/o on their with all those explosives, the lack of concern for safety is amazing. I know that people with a 3rd world life style take more risks because they have less to lose, but this just seems very unintelligent. And fireworks for a religious event, sure why not.

I don't see how this would be substantially different than transporting fireworks in a car or handling them in a store. More than anything, the guy and his son were unlucky.

Are you kidding? When we do fireworks the crowd stands at least 20 feet away, and one, maybe two pyros will walk up and light the fuses, and that's in an open field or the street, not on a little scooter. And all of the other fireworks are somewhere farther away too, not right beside the fireworks being lit. There was enough explosive there to blow their limbs off, that's seriously nuts.

If you think this is all a matter of luck I'd guess you're not really safety conscious either. There's a saying "there's no such thing as an accident".

It's possible that I am misinterpreting the video. I figured that they were just transporting the fireworks to a remote location to be fired. If they were actually lighting fireworks while on the moving vehicle then I agree that's pretty nuts.

What the fuck fireworks can toss you in the air and blow off your leg like that??

The kind of fireworks you see at Disneyland. The ones so loud you can practically feel the boom.
