Well, he didn't use it on them, but he threatened to. The noise was probably terrifying, it seemed to clear everyone away

Yeah I have heard similar things about owning a shotgun, and the sound of racking the shotgun being an effective deterrent.

If you think about all the movies and media you've taken in over the years that associate that exact sound with intense fear... it's no wonder it's effective
