They're either outright ugly, or they're so deep into Uncanny Valley that they're worse than ugly.

This 100%. I'll admit I find some male video game characters attractive, but to do so you have to get used to either extreme uncanny valley "realistic" style or an anime style that's obviously not even slightly realistic. I fully understand people not used to either thinking those characters are more creepy than hot.
