I think he was always thinking it, things are just finally moving to a place where they can be said out loud.

Most people like him didn't want to think it. They went out of their way to avoid thinking it.

Undoubtedly a lot of people in Hollyweird were probably thinking it, but waiting until (as you said) things have moved a place where they can be said out loud only demonstrates that their career matters more than anything else.
