It seems he writes a few of these 'first person essays' for CBC. I found one under a slightly different name about his coming out as 'trans non-binary' to his grandparents. Seems they're your standard hard working immigrant Asian family. Can't imagine how heart-breaking it must be to have someone like this as a child or grandchild.
