In addition to the other things people here have pointed out (losing the spotlight due to the wife being pregnant, the fetish aspect, the selfishness/narcissistic aspect, wanting to trap the wife in the marriage), I also bet a lot of the men that do this when their wives are pregnant are also Peter Pan types and trooning out and abandoning their families while doing so is a way to keep playtime going.
