And how is this a surprise? People have been dicking around with Wikipedia articles for many years now in pursuit of their ideology. It's specifically why Wikipedia is considered a dubious source for most everything that actually matters.

Wikipedia's leadership should have come down hard on it when it began, but they didn't because (in too many cases) they were the ones doing the ideological spinning. Booting people, including the leaders, for complaining about the problem--especially if the problem now affects them--is just inevitable follow up.

It’s fun going to the wayback machine and watching fascism evolve from a radical left-wing ideology to a mainstream right-wing ideology, because now we know that conservative = bad and Nazis = bad, therefore conservatives = Nazis.

And they've consequently put in good work stripping "Nazi" and everything associated with it of any power that it has, so that if/when an actual believer of the Nazi creed ever gets into a position of real power, nobody will believe it or care when the screams of alarm start. It's why nobody gives a shit about those Azov guys in Ukraine, whether they are or aren't, because for more and more people, it's just a word that means "I don't like that person, and since I'm good, that means that they're bad, and since Nazis were bad, they have to be Nazis."

I think it's because the US is so isolated from any of the wars it does or doesn't get involved in: if the Slovak National Party wins on its "stomp Magyar babies with big hobnail boots, cleanse the South, send them back to the Volga" platform, Orban's sending the tanks; in the US that'd just mean people backing the pro-Bratislava party put Slovak flags on their Twitter Instagram profiles

Tony Poe and Gust Avratokos could play their Apocalypse Now/Charlie Wilson's War games until one day LBJ announces we've been attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin or Manhattan tourists notice that one United plane's flying WAY too low

so in Europe "Nazism" means something specific that means your cities get incinerated, while in America it just means "somebody I disagree with who's sorta loud": it helps that you have a relatively small KKK or Rockwell running around to stay in the cameras

so by 1960 the US was jumping into this "Vietnam" country at the behest of the Laotian Committee for the Defense of National Interests, or in 2016 pouring cash and ammo into the Nureddin az-Zengi Brigade because they were fighting a former ally; backing people fighting for units that grabbed P*lack babies by the ankles and battered them against trees under the Black Sun is just an extension of this whole foreign-policy getup where the decision-makers don't even speak the language of the country they're overthrowing
