Oof, they’re getting a hell of a beating in the replies. The ACLU has become a clown car.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but at one time the ACLU was so utterly devoted to the cause of free speech and the right to assemble that they went to bat on behalf of actual, bonafide Nazis, defending their right to gather for one of their rallies. The organization's leadership at that time recognized that the cause of freedom, for everyone, is paramount and acted in accordance with that.

Today's ACLU is a pathetic and twisted mockery that cloaks itself in the violated corpse of the real ACLU as a way to hide its true nature from the population at large. Fortunately, its disguise is growing more and more tattered every time it does something like this, and soon everyone will be able to see the perversion in its true form.

Edit: Saw this in a comment, laughed.

Yeah, I’m aware of the ACLU’s former stance on free speech and free association. Seems they lost their way completely fairly recently - probably took in a class of lawyers who had been steeped in critical social justice at law school and then set about twisting the hallowed organisation into its present state.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, the ACLU lawyer who fought and won the first amendment case in question on behalf of the Nationalist States White Freedom Party, is still alive aged 86. I wonder what she thinks of what's going on now. After she won stated that, " "I defended the First Amendment, and you seldom get to defend the First Amendment by defending people you like ... You don't know whether the First Amendment is alive and well until it is tested by people with despicable ideas." She was a black woman, defending the rights of people to say things that denigrated her but she did it because she believed in people's rights over her feelings. Because she understood that if you take away people's rights to say things because you don't like them, you have also taken away your own right to free speech because free speech is gone.

But I wouldn't be remotely surprised if she just goes along with the mob now.

I'm not laying the blame squarely at Chase Strangio's feet. But she certainly carries some of that burden

Iirc there was a leadership coup. I can't really remember the deets but I looked into why they're so different than they used to be.

They're so committed to civil liberties that they have declared they will not take on 2A cases either.

Now this may be a controversial statement, but frankly I don't give a fuck about the mental wellbeing of rapists and murderers. I certainly don't care about the mental wellbeing of a rapist murderer

But you think it's fair for a rapist trans woman to be in jail with a rapist woman?

A better title would be "ratioed", when you said community noted I thought they receive a community note, that fact check feature

[–]xoenix[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

No, this was some child murderer/rapist who was in prison for decades.

[–]bucetao6969Ace Spectrum 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

They have been fighting for more and more insane causes in recent years.

Ok one can at least understand this tweet though.
