I suspect she may have. She said her proposal was for a paper about the effects of trans women in women's sports. So odds are she'd accepted some sort of push back at some point in her project.

That makes it even more confusing because the teacher said the project was fine so how do you even discuss the project without differentiating somehow?

My guess is that the teacher is just stupid and clumsily trying to make this project go away. Or maybe thought she could torture the student with passive-aggressive language games, but quickly got in over her head.
