There's a lot of (older) self-diagnosed autistic adults who are probably very legit. It just wasn't diagnosed in childhood anywhere near as much a few decades ago, and if it's not too severe there's no point getting an official diagnosis as an adult - there's no cure, and you can get plenty of advice from self-help books etc. And older people aren't likely to want to celebrate it as an 'identity', either.

In the UK there’s been a rash of celebrities touting their adult diagnoses, which in no way interfered with their successful careers but as they aged they ran out of interesting things to say about themselves have resorted to suddenly making this discovery about themselves just as they had books/shows/albums coming out.

*I’m only talking about the celebs, not normal people who get an adult diagnosis.
