But if they stop self-diagnosing, how would they ever have all of those conditions that they then use to explain why they can't work, why they can't behave in socially-appropriate ways, and why they have to share their perversions and fixations with people who don't want to know?

They could go to the doctor and get an actual diagnosis. It's not that hard the doctors aren't exactly stingy with diagnosing this stuff either.

Exactly, and the "but some people can't AFFORD to go to the doctor" thing is bullshit. FIND A WAY to afford it. Go without that anime figurine, go without the new game...hell, dumpster dive or live in your car for a month if it comes down to it. And "but some people are far from a doctor who does it"- again, bullshit. FIND A WAY to make it. Public transportation. A friend or family member. HITCHHIKE if you have to, but make it there.

Because all of it will be worth it. If you get diagnosed properly, you'll get eligible for disability. You can get Medicaid so you can afford doctor's visits. You'll get food stamps to afford food. You get Section 8 so you get controlled, cheaper rent. Shit, you get Social Security and THEY'LL GIVE YOU MONEY- just cut you a check to not work. If you think you have a mental disability, you can't afford NOT TO get it.

The only reason to self-diagnose with all of that is "they know damn well you don't have it, any doctor worth their salt will call that they're faking it (and even then, many doctors will absolutely give you the diagnosis even if you're 100% faking it), and they just want to be in the club and look cool and interesting and if they go for a diagnosis, the gravy train's over."

Fauxtists, I’m coining that for any one with a self-diagnosis of the ‘tism.

ADFakeD, for self-diagnosed ADHDers.

Gotta come up with some for the other commonly faked diagnoses.

WTMM, for the stuff (multiple personalities, etc.) that is either super-rare or has seen to be nonexistent in society but self-diagnosers claim all the time (short for "watched too many movies.")

I was watching a show the other day and the tried and true amnesia plot line came into play and I sat there wondering, does this actually happen in real life?

Like I'm sitting there wondering what exactly the medical workings for amnesia are? Certainly you see it with brain damage and the like but "I remember everything but forgot who I am" isn't something I've ever encountered irl. "I don't remember anything within a year before and after the accident" is something I've seen. I've also experienced the fun times of not having a memory during a particularly long bender.

But the movie form of amnesia seems like a total fiction to me.

It is. Movie amnesia is almost always retrograde, when I'm pretty sure antegrade is way more common (not counting childhood amnesia which everyone who's not on the autism spectrum gets). And I highly doubt getting hit on the head again would instantly cure it.

Transtrender

There's a lot of (older) self-diagnosed autistic adults who are probably very legit. It just wasn't diagnosed in childhood anywhere near as much a few decades ago, and if it's not too severe there's no point getting an official diagnosis as an adult - there's no cure, and you can get plenty of advice from self-help books etc. And older people aren't likely to want to celebrate it as an 'identity', either.

In the UK there’s been a rash of celebrities touting their adult diagnoses, which in no way interfered with their successful careers but as they aged they ran out of interesting things to say about themselves have resorted to suddenly making this discovery about themselves just as they had books/shows/albums coming out.

fuck ‘em

*I’m only talking about the celebs, not normal people who get an adult diagnosis.

Self diagnosing with some mental conditions are no different to them than self diagnosing with various genders.

I have a bigger problem with the fake diagnoses people because they’re essentially trying to gain sympathy and attention by pretending to be suffering. They also make it harder on people with actual problems. The worst of the bunch are the twats with “emotional support” animals.

Only the gender-groomers are worse than the fake disorders crowd.

Oh, those ESA motherfuckers are some the most entitled, aggravating motherfuckers alive. I rank them up there with militant mombies for people I just want to smack crosseyed.

Yeah the ESA is clearly an excuse to bring your pet into places where you aren't supposed to.

I'll be honest if you have a panic attack going to the hardware store or something so much that you need fido to help you maybe you should be going to a mental hospital to fix your crippling anxiety instead?

[–]LyingSpirit472 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah- the people who fake a bunch of genders are idiots, but at least when they say "you don't need dysphoria to be trans" they still allow the people with dysphoria in the club.

The fake diagnoses people turned on the people who were actually diagnosed long ago and said "You have diagnosis privilege so you're basically no better than a neurotypical, and anyway you're not cool and hanging out with us makes us sad so you've got to go. This is our high school clique now."

Gender dysphoria is a mental disorder

[–]Q-Continuum-kin 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Well at this point most of them don't have gender dysphoria.

[–]notafed 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's partly narcisism and an excuse for being an asshole.

That's why they don't get professionally diagnosed and treated.
