Aren't pretty much all elections like this though? I mean it's pretty much a given that the presidential election will at best give lip service to the issues in the most bland and non-committal way possible.

Only real difference with trump was like.

Obama Style: Immigration is a complex issue but we are taking ReAl steps to help AmErIcAnS and ensure that the American dream stays alive.

Me: what the fuck does that mean? What steps? What dream? Can we talk about something that isn't fucking stupid like visa requirements and illegal entry enforcement?

Trump: Screw those guys! We need to build a wall!

Me: Well saying "build the damn wall already" is better than giving absolutely zero policy positions. Though it does beg the questions. Why build the wall? With what? Also can we please talk about visa requirements and illegal entry enforcement and prosecution instead of this grandstanding bullshit?

You just choose whether you want the swave "Galactic Federation of Planets style" Picard diplomacy or the "Set phasers to kill" style of Kirk diplomacy but fuck neither actually means anything in real life. It's all advertising.

Well, it's slightly different than a popularity contest, though Trump succeeding by being the first famous person has helped change things to popularity contest (the worse nadir than even Trump was all the people who demanded Dwayne Johnson run for President, without even realizing he's said in the past he is a Republican, which flat out said people only care as a popularity contest. [That had an extra benefit of "woke racism" because it was "well, he's a rich, famous, black/Samoan man, OF COURSE he'd be a Democrat" as well]. Shit, the popularity contest is so bad that even as Kanye West became a Nazi, he was still getting requests to run for President...and even after it's known he is, he'd probably get the nomination if he won just on popularity.

As far as the issues, it'll never happen because the people view politics as their sports team and don't care about the issues, it's THEIR TEAM so it doesn't matter.
