They also have a history of being much, much more conservative than the UK which makes this story extra weird.

Wasn’t that because pretty much all the young people used to have to leave to find work in the UK leaving the island essentially stocked with geriatrics (an old friend of mine, now sadly dead, who had a holiday home there used to say it was full of old people, tax cheats and the unemployed). Maybe the post-2008 economy meant more young progressives stayed and have got greater influence.
