Well, "oppression" is kind of subjective... I consider mask mandates and DUI laws oppressive, but most people disagree.

Still, it cannot be denied that "telling oligarchs that they need to pay higher taxes so the roads don't fall apart" requires a big, armed bureaucracy. And big, armed bureaucracies don't just let their rifles rust in a barn.
