Ego, although I would suggest that women are generally more likely to go off on one than men when they make the approach and crash and burn.
In absolute numbers yeah men will be have the highest number of negative responses, the rate of shit responses vs rates of approach I think is probably the other way round.
But I think its going to be due to the simple fact that women make much less approaches and are used to being the one that say no rather then being told no.
