Good news, then! It's real funny to me that it's an ostensibly conservative media org that provides a voice of reason. Strange times.

It’s their “We give no fucks” attitude that allows it. Everyone else is worried about hurting the fee-fees of the child-mutilation crowd.

I’m in disagreement with Matt Walsh on 99% of what he says, but he has hit the nail on the head about the trans stuff.

It's the classic ebb and flow ideas between the right and left. When the right is in power many on the far left have reasonable takes and complaints, of course they are also filled with bad ideas and takes as well and once they gain power they'll try to implement those fully, fail miserably, then public opinion shifts.

Right is the same. I'm generally in favor of allowing gay marriage but the right has consistently pointed out that allowing it is going to open up a big can of worms, something the left ignored for years, you've got to assume and take precautions towards bad actors and future issues whenever making policy. And it's usually the opposition whom make the reasonable points about how policies will fail whether that is right or left, such concerns need to be addressed. Be that whatever the issue is. At the moment the main difference between the conservatives and the liberals I see is the liberals seem more concerned with making sure people in edge cases are helped compared to the majority, conservatives care more about the majority experience rather than the edge cases, in real life you need to consider all of it. Edge cases are rare but will generate enough public sympathy and attention to derail policy eventually. But focusing solely on the edge cases will eventually leave the majority feeling disallusioned and annoyed which will also derail policy.

I've made that argument with climate change for years, we should be making policies that help to encourage lower pollution and carbon emissions. But if we fuck the economy over it will be very difficult to enact further policies which will ultimately make the situation worse than it could be in the long run. Theoretically we could use government authority to end all carbon emissions tomorrow, but the resulting economic impact would see whatever government making that policy be swifty removed from power, the policy not being followed, and any progress towards reduction arrested for years as the public is rightly resistant to the idea.

I'm in the same boat, yeah.

I find Matt refreshing. He makes good points. I am not religious but he is very clear about his beliefs and I can respect that. I don't have to agree with him on most things, he fights for women's rights and the rights of children. The "left" doesn't do either anymore.

The trouble is the “left” that you’re talking about is a tiny fraction of the actual left that has scared the majority into silence on fundamental issues of right and wrong. The shame of the left isn’t that there is a minority that is pro-child mutilation and pro-invasion of women’s spaces, it’s that they have collectively abrogated their duty to stand up against such nonsense and have, in some instances, joined in with the pile ons of people who did brave the backlash. I think part of that is just being scared in the face of a very virulent mob and part of it is the fact that they were right about gay rights and cannot envision being wrong about trans rights because the two have been, quite disingenuously, linked by the TRAs.

I don’t know if the left can be saved in the short term, at least not until the trans and QIA+ issues pass from the front and we return to more real problems and issues.

That's fair but remember the religious right has it's own share of crazy whackjobs same as the left and they have the same issues the left has with being unable to deal with their own ideologically extreme elements. They'll pull the moderates farther right and there will be a lot of overlap the same how the TRA piled the gay rights agenda from "we want legal recognition of our unuons" to the eventual "we want to be able to fuck children legally".

It is the ultimate irony that that progressive movement is seen as a leftist movement when it fact it is merely an authoritarian movement. Now some degree of authoritarianism is preferable to true anarchy or hardline libertarianism, bit it's a careful balance that must be maintained between what is good for society as a whole and maintaining individual freedoms. The progressive elements on the right are largely religious, some may describe them as regressive but that's all relative to your own views on the so called arrow of history. Religious right will champion a lot of causes that the left finds common ground with, helping the poor for example, you'll see predatory banking practices go under fire. You'll see a strong anti-gambling wing of the religious right, but this morphs from helping the poor to becoming a strong anti-vice movement that essentially turns into the fun police. It's not much different than the current woke dynamics killing comedy and the entertainment industry. I think you'll see this morph into a strong anti-pornography movement soon, as I think overconsumption of pornography is one of the causes behind various sexual deviances and mental illness. That said, you don't necessarily want the religious right to be the ones solely deciding the policies on what exactly constitutes pornography or not as you'll find that the more extreme elements there are essentially going to be considering just about any kind of movie that is rated more than PG to be considered pornographic. The farther extreme you go the less people there are that hold the extreme view, but a biology textbook would pass for pornography among the Christian right. You'll see some church schools have the grumpy old lady go through the dictionaries crossing out any naughty words with pen and cutting out Michelangel's David from the encyclopedia.
